Scrutinizing The Lexicon Of The Planet Of The Apes

I should start things off by being clear that I am a voracious reader of reference books for things that don’t exist. I can still remember the day when I finally tracked down a copy of the original Star Trek Technical Manual, which at that time was long out of print and cost me many saved allowances and birthday gift checks. That was my gateway drink into the realm of fictitious reference guides and I have quite a large collection to this day. A recent addition has been From Aldo to Zira: Lexicon of the Planet of the Apes by Rich Handley and published by Hasslein Books. This may be my favorite fictional encyclopedia ever.

Lexicon runs over 400 pages and has a staggering amount of information in it. To be honest, the scope of my Apes knowledge encompassed the five original films, the TV series and the Tim Burton remake. I was aware that here were comic books based on the property, but surely there couldn’t be much more than that. I was wrong. This book includes everything that has had anything to do with the Apes franchise, including a vast array of things that were never produced, yet written in some form or another, like unpublished comic book scripts and screenplays for proposed feature film remakes that never took off. My favorite is the inclusion of information from filmstrips based on the TV series and released for kids in the UK. Yeah, I didn’t know that existed either. Oh, and I would love to see the unpublished Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes comic that was proposed to Dark Horse Comics by Lovern Kindzierski.

At over 3200 entries there is no way I have read this book in its entirety. That will take a very long time. But I have had a blast flipping through it and following up on references mentioned in other entries. The end result of all of this is that I not only want to desperately want to rewatch the films and TV series, but now I feel a compulsion to track down the various comic books, cartoons and other ephemera that has cropped up over the nearly 50 years since the Pierre Boulle novel that started the whole thing. Speaking of that first novel, I find it interesting that out of all the films, cartoons, adaptations and remakes there has never been a straight adaptation of the original Boulle story. That’s a film I’d really like to see. But i digress.

Mention must also be made of the extraordinary cover and interior artwork by Patricio Carbajal. The cover itself is pretty staggering in its quality and the fact that he did several other black and white pieces for the inside is pretty amazing. If there is any way to get Carbajal on a Planet of the Apes comic book, I hope that someone does so very soon (I’m look at you BOOM! Studios!). If you only purchased this book for Carbajal’s artwork alone you’d be getting a terrific deal, but, really, the unprecedented amount of information contained herein will leave you speechless. I was elated to get a copy of Rich Handley's "Lexicon of the Planet of the Apes" which is a real treat for fans of the film, TV, book, and comic adventures on Pierre Boulle's Monkey Planet. Seriously this book is just exploding with facts on one of my favourite subjects and I heartily recommend it for casual fans and the hardcore ones who know what General Urko's wife's name is.

After the publication of his first book Timeline of the Planet of the Apes, author Rich Handley triumphantly follows up on its success with From Aldo To Zira: Lexicon of the Planet of the Apes – a 400-page encyclopaedia listing every character, creature, device, location, weapon and much, much more from the Apes universe which consist of the initial five films, the Tim Burton remake, the Live-Action and animation series, a variety of comic books, and a whole host of other adaptations and spin-offs. With a staggering 3,200 entries, no stone or scroll is left unturned. Even diehard fans will be amazed by some of them; Baboonjas, the psychic ninja cult from Ape City (a 4-issue comic miniseries published by Malibu Comics in 1990), and Deadeye, a rare scared-face, cigar-chomping gorilla bounty hunter resin “garage kit” are two examples.
Fortunately, Handley has managed to reference Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes, the first of a soon-to-be-released series of Apes novels from BLAM! Ventures, which he edited for author Andrew E.C. Gaska. What’s more Lexicon, published by Hasslein Books, contains names and designations from rejected scripts and storylines such as those written by Twilight Zone creator and co-author of the original Planet of the Apes screenplay, Rod Serling, and comic book writer Ty Templeton. Each entry includes a description, an abbreviation, a symbol and suffix which can be easily identified by using a chart situated at the beginning of the book. All the categories have been compiled and indexed alphabetically at the back of the book for easy use.
This comprehensive reference guide is illustrated throughout with black and white photographs and stunning full-page chapter illustrations drawn by gifted artist, Patricio Carbaja (check out the excellent cover showing Dr. Zauis); credit to Paul Giachetti too for the outstanding overall design and layout. It also has a foreword by film and television historian John Kenneth Muir, the award-winning author of more than twenty books.
With the Apes prequel, Caesar: Rise of the Apes due to hit cinema screens in November this year, the timing of the publication of Lexicon is very apt, although, for obvious reasons, no entries from the film are included. Looks like nothing can keep those “damned dirty apes” down.
Burnt out from the extensive work he did compiling Timeline of the Planet of the Apes, Handley has dusted off the ash to produce an equally essential piece of Apes literature. It sure is a mighty piece of work that every Ape fan should have, and makes an excellent companion to the aforementioned book. If the only character name you know from the Apes mythos is Galen, then you too need this book. Handley’s extensive research and tenacious work has paid off big time and makes for compulsive reading. But be warned: once you pick it up, you won’t be able to put it down!

VINCENT PRICE PRESENTS # 25 "HOUSE OF THE RAVEN" review

Issue #25 of Bluewater's "Vincent Price Presents" series, is probably the best issue to date! Due out in stores in January of next year, the issue has Vincent Price alter-ego Dr. Pitt, being invited to the home of Dr. Van Horn, an old ex-friend turned rival. The good Dr. Pitt thinks he's being invited to Van Horn's massive estate, to bury the decades old hatchet between them. But Van Horn has other, more sinister ideas. This issue works so well because it tells a very strong story first and foremost. And has some terrific writing. Everything from dialogue, to the story itself, is crisp and strong. The dialogue in fact is so good that you hate that the story actually has to move on from the moments where Van Horn and Dr. Pitt verbally spar and joust with one another over a few glasses of aged wine.
The entire issue could've just stayed with those moments and it would've still been worth the read. Anyways, Van Horn has apparently never forgiven Dr. Pitt for being more of a ladies man than he was back in college. And although Van Horn eventually wound up getting the girl, the same girl Dr. Pitt asked to marry him all those years ago in college...the bitter Van Horn still seeks vengeance upon the good doctor. Thus, he informs him that during a recent expedition, he was bitten by a werewolf. And will change into one in three hours. Three hours that Dr. Pitt has to find a silver bullet, hidden somewhere in the mansion. Before Van Horn's transformation is complete, and he tears Dr. Pitt to pieces. The story leap-frogs from this point, and takes some interesting turns as well with a ghost, and a demon getting thrown into the mix in typical morbid humor fashion. The kind of black humor that this franchise is known for. But the story itself is very interesting, and I couldn't help but think of how it would make for a good movie some day. A film adaptation of this particular issue would be pretty cheap to make I gather, and wouldn't need a huge amount of rewrites. It's simple, yet effective. And reading the story, you really got an appreciation for this series and how far its come. Look for big surprises from this franchise come next year, and as always...more dark, macabre, and interesting stories that the master of horror himself, Vincent Price, presents!

Revolution on the Planet of the Apes author Ty Templeton: I just received my copy of the timeline in the mail today, and I am staggered at the book. It's just wonderful! Like you, I treasured my timeline from the Marvel comics magazine in the seventies (which you refer to as the backbone of this project), and to see it expanded upon so completely is just jawdropping. The cover, and the package itself, are filled with lovely bits and pieces I'm glad to have print versions of (especially the cover galleries at the back). Independent comics company Bluewater Productions will do its part to fill in the blanks surrounding Jolie's life when the publisher debuts its latest biography comic this January, Female Force: Angelina Jolie.

The 32-page comic, written by Brent Sprecher with pencils by Nuno Nobre, will be available in comic shops and from online retailers such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. The comic will retail for $3.99.

Writer Sprecher says that even long-time fans of Jolie's work will be surprised at what they learn about the talented actress.

"I learned a great deal about her struggles and triumphs as an award-winning actress, mother and humanitarian," Sprecher said. Bluewater Productions is no stranger to biography comics. The company, which publishes the Political Power, Fame and Female Force series of biography comics, has made headlines for its features on such personalities as Lady Gaga, Sarah Palin, Justin Bieber and J.K. Rowling. The company plans to release future comics on Danica Patrick, Beyonce, Bill O'Reilly and Betty White.

Bluewater president and founder Darren Davis says that he has a simple goal with his company's bio comics: introduce a new generation of readers to the wonders of sequential storytelling.

"We're focusing our biography titles on the most intriguing celebrities, world leaders and artists," Davis said. "This is by design. We want to bring new fans to comics. One way to do this is to publish biographies on celebrities that already have strong and dedicated fan bases."

For his part, Sprecher hopes that his contribution to the Female Force lineup will shed some new light on an often misunderstood actress.

"My hope is that this biography, in some small way, inspires others to follow Angelina Jolie's example and make helping those in need a part of their daily lives," Sprecher said.
